BTS, Doja Cat & J Balvin Performers for MTV’s 2020 VMAs
Despite the coronavirus pandemic, MTV’s 2020 Video Music Awards is still going strong. There will be, of course, changes to how the show will be run this year, with New York Governor Andrew Cuomo continuing to implement the statewide social distancing rules, there will be little to no live audience in attendance. However, the awards will have an actual in-person ceremony spanning all five boroughs — Brooklyn, The Bronx, Staten Island, Queens and Manhattan — music’s biggest night will feature epic performances from various iconic locations, with the main location being held at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York; the first event held at the venue since the COVID-19 crisis. The Barclays Center released a statement regarding the ceremony saying, “Show producers alongside Barclays Center management have been working closely with state and local officials to implement best practices for everyone involved. Among the measures all parties involved have aligned to include extensive social distancing procedures, meaningful capacity limitations and the virtualization of components where possible.”
Today, the network announced the award’s first three performers being BTS, Doja Cat & J Balvin. Although in recent years viewership for the VMAs has significantly declined due to its decreasing pop cultural relevance, this year, the show will attempt to move into a more diverse area. Kpop boy group BTS is said to be performing their upcoming English single, Dynamite, which will be released on August 21st. The group is nominated in three different categories for: Best pop, best K-pop and best choreography for their previous single, On.
For Doja Cat, this will mark her first performance on the VMA stage after she completely took over 2020 with her breakout single Say So. The single went number 1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 and is nominated for Song of the year. J Balvin is performing for the second time in a row with MTV attempting to give Latin music its representation at the awards. J Balvin had a big year in 2019 with his studio album Colores, winning Best Urban song at the Latin Grammys and even making a cameo at the Super Bowl LIV halftime show with Shakira & Jlo. J Balvin is nominated for best collaboration and best Latin.
More performers will be announced in the following weeks before the show, and each artist will be performing at various venues. MTV reassured viewers in a statement saying, “the health and safety of artists, fans, industry, staff, and partners is of the utmost importance.” This way of doing award shows can be setting the stage for whats to come in the future with ceremonies like the Grammys. The 2020 VMAs will air Sunday, August 30th at 8pm EST on MTV.
