The Weeknd’s After Hours Concert Experience to be on TikTok
Scheduled for August 7th, “The Weeknd Experience” will be featured on TikTok as a virtual live concert in partnership with Republic Records, XO, and Wave (a virtual avatar based start up concert). Wave has recently put on virtual concerts for John Legend, Tinashe and Lindsay Stirling. The Weeknd will perform numerous tracks from his most recent album, After Hours, and will be the first-ever cross reality experience on TikTok. The Weeknd will be seen as a virtual avatar on screen and viewers will be able to interact with the singer as he performs as well.
The Grammy award winning R&B-pop artist will be performing hit number 1 singles including In Your Eyes and Blinding Lights which inspired over 1.5 million video creations on TikTok and gained millions of views with the #BlindingLightsChallenge. The Weeknd Experience will also raise money for the Equal Justice Initiative, a charity which provides legal representation to people who have been illegally convicted, unfairly sentenced, or abused in state jails and prisons. Fans can donate directly through the TikTok app or they can support by purchasing exclusive merchandise inspired by the concert. TikTok also added that they will match the proceeds raised with a donation of their own. The exclusive merch will only be available from August 6th-10th.
Many artists have been relying on live streamed performances to compensate for in-person concerts and festivals, but with The Weeknd holding his specifically on TikTok, he’s taking advantage of the apps’ increasing popularity and endless possibilities when it comes to marketing and promotion of music. Similar to Travis Scott, who held his “Astronomical Experience” via Fortnite which was seen by over 28 million players back in April, artists are starting to become creative with how they interact with their fans over the internet. The live stream will start this Friday at 8:30 pm EST exclusively on the official TikTok account.
